To date, it has been funded by a grant from the NH Charitable Foundation. Members have studied (or are studying) the book, "The Natural Step for Communities: How Cities and Towns Can Change to Sustainable Practices" by Sarah James and Torbjorn Lanti. PSI members are also participating in "solar barnraisings" in the tradition of the old Amish barnraisings. These bring people together to help each other install solar powered water heaters at their homes.
There was also a Sustainability Community Conversation held Saturday, November 21st, 2009 at Portsmouth High School. The more than 100 people attending the event came up with these five important elements: transportation, energy consumption, zero waste, local food production and community involvement. Some of the suggestions within these categories were more bike paths, walking trails and affordable public transportation in order to decrease the number of cars in the city. Also more community supported gardens and greenhouses were suggested. These issues will help the city of Portsmouth forge a five-year sustainability plan.
